I think you're spot on about the harms of recursive slop.

I think you're wrong about this bit:

The thing is, you can already see in programming models and in things like Anthropic Mythos, that LLMs are capable of making a hypothesis *and then testing it* and iterating on the response, _if_ it is a domain where automated testing is possible. It is possible in software and it seems potentially possible in some domains of physics. This goes deeper than just regurgitating things that they've previously read and gives, perhaps, the possibility of original discoveries.

I still have doubts about whether they "really understand" that some things are objectively true, or whether they are trying to find and tell the truth. (Not that all humans always tell the truth, but many of us are at least capable of trying.)
