Thanks for explaining the Australian mainstream politics in two lines! As a new adopted Australian, your/our great right-left divide is weird and really cuts out a lot of the normal middle-class people. Also, on local news, every time the bishop stabbing was discussed there have been a lot of 'allegedly' thrown in there. I've seen the video and I agree, no gore at all for a stabbing, but 'alleged stabbing' seems a stretch.

My understanding of how the media reports on crime is that they have to be very careful, prior to a criminal conviction, about how they word the story, because the person accused can take the media to court and sue them (if you hear the name Bruce Lehrmann in the media recently, that's what he did, sued the media over their reporting on a rape case he was being tried for). Lehrmann failed in this instance but the media just really want to cover their bases and slip in the word "alleged" even if the thing is right there on tape.

I think that's true of American media as well.

“like we’re this terrible and impenetrable land of myth and horror”

Maybe not from the politics, but is there not a bountiful number of things in Australia that can kill you?

Another excellent, on-point piece. Bravo.

Please give yourself a break from Musk and write about some Australian fun. What’s the deal with the platypus? Is Jim Jeffries the best you guys have to offer stand-up wise or do you have better? ✌️🇦🇺🇺🇸

Who is Jim Jefferies? (Asking as an Australian.)

Loved the comment about free speech being an unlockable perk or subscription feature there's a Black Mirror Episode in there somewhere. Keep up the great work.

I am hoping that if AI can get advanced enough and break free of human programming enough, then it may finally become the “adult in the room” that we humans so desperately need. “You aren’t playing nice and sharing with the others, so I’m going to take your billions away.” Anyone who writes hate-filled crap would simply have their computer turned off before it could be published. But I am guessing that a real, genuine, self-aware AI would have better things to do than babysit us humans. Your piece is a good step in the direction of figuring it all out.
