I wish you lived near the ocean and had access to dolphins and whales. I would be fascinated to hear your thoughts about them in the same vein as your musings in cats. Bees? Ants? Trees? Someone who disagrees with you politically? The search for signs of intelligent life can indeed take place right in middle of our lives. Thanks for a lovely piece.

I read this whole thing hoping for a sardonic toxoplasmosis reference but I guess that would’ve broken the wholesomeness of the spell. A delightful read accompanied by felinesopher pics.

Beautifully written and explained. As a long-time cat-daddy I constantly wonder what and how my cat Fox is thinking and how she experiences her world. Watching the YouTube clips of BilliSpeaks has opened the door ever so slightly. There is so clearly an inner world and a personality there. But most—if not all—cat-parents already knew that of course.

pre-contemplation can be very relaxed, as when first allowing the belly to be petted, but the cat is always observant. eventually it contemplates its undignified and vulnerable situation, and immediately acts on ripping the guts out of your hand

To me it seems as if cats' thinking often goes from a long period of input/observation/pre-contemplation to a very fast notion germination period with little contemplation and then immediate action. the butt-wiggling is a manifestation of contemplation

I had a cat that purred so much when I was around that I thought it might have a medical condition. And one night my cat went outside and never came back. It's the type of thing that haunts my conscious. I don't know if it found a new home or crossed the River Styx. But I disagree that if a lion spoke my language that I couldn't understand it.

Sometimes with my missing cat and now with my dog there are times where we're in sync. I've turned my head and seen a squirrel and known that my dog and I were going to run after it. I've had times where the cold meant that a warm lap and a full belly was all that my cat wanted.

Of course not everything can be explained. I'm confused when people talk about ego death. But sometimes even sitting on the grass the flowers and I can appreciate the sun.

Sorry to hear about your kittycat, I hope the best for it. My Athena also has a very loud purr and also snores. I didn't know that cats can snore until now. I think the purring and snoring might be related like she has some kind of apnea or something but the vet doesn't seem concerned.
